Used Golf Balls by Grade: What Do 5A, 4A, 3A & 2A Really Mean?

Buying used golf balls can save you a lot of money, but the different grades can be confusing if you're not familiar with them. What does 5A actually mean? Is 4A good enough for regular play? What are 3A and 2A golf balls best used for?

Golf ball grades describe the condition and appearance of a used golf ball. At iLovetoGolf, our recycled golf balls are cleaned, sorted, and hand-graded so you have a better idea of what to expect before you buy.

What Do 5A, 4A, 3A & 2A Mean?

Our golf ball grading system includes four grades:

  • 5A (AAAAA) – Our best quality recycled golf balls

  • 4A (AAAA) – Our second-best quality recycled golf balls

  • 3A (AAA) – Bargain C-Grade golf balls

  • 2A (AA Hit-A-Way) – Practice and Hit-A-Way golf balls

The right grade depends on your budget, how you plan to use the balls, and how much cosmetic wear you're comfortable with.

5A Golf Balls – Our Best Quality

5A golf balls are our highest grade of recycled golf balls. They play and feel like new balls, although they are still used golf balls and may have minimal markings such as small pen or ink marks.

Not every ball will be completely perfect. However, there will be no major flaws or marks in this grade.

5A golf balls will not include Practice or X-Out balls, although corporate and team logos may be present.

Best for:

  • Golfers who want our highest grade

  • Regular or competitive play

  • Players who care about appearance

  • Golfers looking for premium condition at a lower price

4A Golf Balls – Near Mint Condition

4A golf balls are our second-best quality recycled golf balls. They will feel as if they have only been hit a few holes and may have minor cosmetic imperfections, but nothing that affects the play and/or integrity of the ball.

A 4A ball may contain a couple of the following:

  • Pen marks

  • Slight blemishes

  • Slight discoloration

  • Minor scuffs

These imperfections do not affect the performance of the ball. Like 5A, this grade will not include Practice or X-Out balls, but corporate and team logos may be present.

Best for:

  • Regular rounds

  • Everyday golfers

  • Players looking for excellent value

  • Golfers who don't mind minor cosmetic imperfections

For many golfers, 4A provides a great balance between condition, playability, and price.

3A Golf Balls – Bargain Quality

3A golf balls are our bargain C-Grade golf balls that did not make it into our 4A category.

These balls may have player marks, scuffs, discoloration, and/or blemishes. Some may have a slight textured feel due to certain marks, although not all balls will have this characteristic.

3A golf balls do not look new, but they can still be used for play. Practice balls, X-Outs, and corporate or team logos may be included in this grade.

Best for:

  • Casual rounds

  • Everyday play (not competitive)

  • Beginners

  • Practice

  • Golfers who prioritize savings over appearance

If appearance isn't a major concern, 3A can provide a lot of value for the price.

2A Golf Balls – Hit-A-Way & Practice

2A golf balls are our lowest grade and are intended for practice balls or Hit-A-Way use only.

These balls have major flaws and significant cosmetic wear. They are not intended for playing on a golf course and are best suited for practice sessions where appearance and condition aren't important.

2A golf balls are non-returnable.

Best for:

  • Practice

  • Hit-A-Way use

  • Swing practice

  • Shagging

  • Golfers looking for the lowest-cost option (these are only for hit-a-way use).

Does Golf Ball Grade Affect Performance?

Golf ball grading primarily describes the condition and appearance of a used golf ball. The original model still determines its designed characteristics, such as distance, feel, and spin.

For example, a 5A and 4A golf ball of the same model are still the same model. The difference is the condition and cosmetic wear.

As you move into the lower grades, the balls will have more noticeable marks, blemishes, discoloration, or other signs of previous use. This is why 2A balls are intended specifically for practice rather than course play.

Which Golf Ball Grade Should You Buy?

The best grade depends on what you're looking for:

  • 5A: Our best quality recycled balls with minimal wear and no major flaws.

  • 4A: Excellent condition with minor cosmetic imperfections that don't affect performance.

  • 3A: Bargain-quality balls with more noticeable wear that can still be used for play.

  • 2A: Major-flaw balls intended for practice and Hit-A-Way use only.

If you want the best appearance and condition, choose 5A or 4A. If saving money is more important, 3A can be a great option. For practice, 2A Hit-A-Way balls offer the lowest-cost choice.

Why Buy Graded Used Golf Balls?

Knowing the condition of a used golf ball before purchasing makes it easier to find the right product for your needs.

At iLovetoGolf, our golf balls go through a cleaning, drying, sorting, and hand-grading process. This helps us separate golf balls by condition so you can choose the grade that fits your budget and intended use.

Instead of simply buying a box labeled "used," you can choose from clearly defined grades and know what type of condition to expect.
